61 - Happy New Year

Welcome to 2023

I had no intention of writing this today, I had planned to take a little newsletter holiday for myself, but there’s something fitting about the new year starting on a “newsletter Sunday”, so here I am.

I rang in the new year alone in my apartment. Thankfully I got to ring in the Nigerian new year on a video call with my parents. I joined the cross over service at my church in Lagos via Youtube and enjoyed having the opportunity to give thanks for the year that was.

Over the past few days, I have spent some time in my camera roll, selecting media for my 2022 recap reel (which is still not done because I can not decide on a fitting audio) and I didn’t find any big achievements to celebrate. Instead I was reminded of random moments of joy. Treating my sister to lunch on her birthday. Stumbling across a salsa bar on a night out in Crete and dancing the night away. Watching my nephson wolf down his eba and okro that I made him. Going on holiday with my friend and her babies. So many happy memories.

The icing on the cake that was 2022 was having three very dear friends visit with me in the days leading up to Christmas, and then getting to spend Christmas day with my best friend and her very welcoming family. I’m still basking in the love and joy I felt this season. I ended the year feeling very grateful.

I recognize that this year was a difficult one for many people, and it is okay to acknowledge that as well. But I hope that amidst it all, as you reflect on the year that was, you find small pockets of joy, and cherish them.

Thank you for allowing me to take up valuable space in your inbox. I truly appreciate it. Also, don’t be afraid to write me back, it’s nice to know I’m not writing into the void.
